Setting the scene
Jurgen Klopp’s men are reeling from last Saturday’s 3-2 Premier League loss to lowly Swansea and Wednesday’s EFL Cup 2-0 aggregate semi-final defeat to Southampton.
Before that the Reds had struggled to squeeze past Division Two minnows Plymouth, who took them to a replay in the third round of the FA Cup.
In the end they thanked Lucas Leiva for his first goal in six years as they put plucky Argyle out of the competition.
The Reds can ill-afford to be beaten by Paul Lambert’s Championship side Wolves to prevent a season that promised so much fall into disrepair.
Klopp’s men look to be running out of steam. The German coach’s all-action game may well be better suited to the continent where players enjoy a winter break to recover from their exertions in the first half of the season.
Given the current situation at Anfield, Klopp may be sorely tempted to field a near full-strength team to see off the visitors first time around.
Wolves, though, will definitely be hoping Liverpool struggle to find the net again.
This is the big moment in their season, having seen off Premier Leaguers Stoke City 2-0 in round three.
Helder Costa and Matt Doherty’s stunning free-kick gave Wolves their first win in the competition for almost six years.
That result was away from home and Lambert said: “The whole performance from start to finish was terrific and we could have been two or three up before we even scored.
“We look like a team that’s full of confidence at the minute.”
