Work starts on 179 council homes in £42m Wolverhampton estate regeneration

Construction has started on the first new homes in the £42m regeneration of Wolverhampton’s New Park Village estate.

Keon Homes, City of Wolverhampton Council’s construction partner, will build 179 energy-efficient council homes over two phases, replacing 1960s maisonettes on the estate.

The first phase will deliver 98 homes over the next two years, following last year’s demolition of the first blocks. The remaining maisonettes will then be demolished, making way for a further 81 homes.

The scheme will provide a mix of one to four-bedroom council homes for rent, along with more parking, a new play area, a green gym and a new housing office for the estate’s tenant management cooperative. The new homes will go to existing tenants on the estate first.

Matt Beckley, partnerships director at Keon Homes, said: “New Park Village is a landmark housing regeneration development, which will create hundreds of high-quality, energy efficient homes.”

Val McKean, chair of New Park Village Committee, said: “This is where the excitement starts. Seeing the new homes going up to replace the old and cold flats we’re currently in will be great.”

Cllr Steve Evans, deputy leader of City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “This is a major milestone that means we will soon start seeing top-quality new council homes for affordable rent coming out of the ground where out-dated 1960s maisonettes once stood.”

The programme is funded by the council’s housing budget, with grant support from Homes England.
